Marijuana Seeds 101: All you Need to Know and More

Every first-time grower learned how to grow and cultivate cannabis by starting with marijuana seeds. Before looking for the best place to buy cannabis seeds online, you must first start with getting to know what cannabis seeds are, how these sprout and what makes a seed a premium seed.

What you need to know about marijuana seeds

Cannabis is classified as a dioecious plant. This means that the female and male reproductive organs of the plant are located on separate plants. Female marijuana plants are grown in an environment that does not have any male cannabis plants to grow what growers and breeders call seedless, high potency marijuana flowers or was known as “sinsemilla.”

For the plants to reproduce, the flower of a female plant must be pollinated by a male plant and then afterwards, the female flower will produce seeds. There are also a variety of cannabis plants that can produce male flowers along with female flowers on the same plant. Called hermaphrodite plants, these were seen in plants that were exposed to environmental stress or plants that were left to flower for a longer period of time. The female plants will create male structures to be able to self-pollinate and to make seeds. This will ensure that more plants will grow in the future.

As the female plants produce seeds and these seeds mature, the plant will soon die. Seeds will either be dropped to the ground adjacent to the plant or taken to different places with the help of carriers. Hopefully, these seeds will germinate successfully and grow into new cannabis plants next spring.

Feminized cannabis seeds

Feminized marijuana seeds are seeds created by stimulating the monoecious, or hermaphrodite conditions in a female marijuana plant. Feminized seeds are made through the following means: by spraying the plant with a colloidal silver solution, through a method called rodelization and by spraying the female plant with gibberellic acid. The latter is the least known solution to make feminized cannabis plants.

Feminized cannabis seeds produce plants that are very identical to the self-pollinated female parent plant because only one set of genes is present. Because there is no male chromosome the seeds will not produce male plants. However, most breeders and growers of feminized seeds do not go through the tedious process of identifying a stable mother plant for seed production. Most of the feminized seeds become hermaphrodites, which are plants that can grow flowers with seeds in them. This can significantly reduce yields. Most experienced growers will not use feminized seeds, therefore, this type of seed will not be used in breeding other strains.

About autoflowering cannabis seeds

Regular cannabis plants start their flowering cycle when the photoperiod or the length of time they are exposed to light each day becomes lesser and lesser to somewhere between 12 and 14 hours. This is regardless of the size or age of the plant. On the other hand, the cannabis species Cannabis ruderalis will start flowering when the plant reaches a particular age. It will not depend on the change in lighting, therefore, it can be grown anytime within the year.

Some breeders have bred the low-THC ruderalis with other potent cannabis varieties to create auto-flowering strains. These will produce different cannabis types like indica, sativa or hybrid plants that will flower as soon as they reach their mature.

This is in especially in northern climates where warmer months are short and cold and wet weather is during the fall. Auto-flowering strains may be bred in early spring and will flower during the longest days of summer to take advantage of the best amount of light available. Auto-flowering strains cannot be kept in a developmental state.

Growing using cannabis seeds vs growing with cannabis clones

Another way to grow cannabis seeds is to clone a plant. This is a cutting taken from a plant placed in a growing medium to stimulate root production. Once the plants have rooted, it can be grown into an adult plant that is identical to the parent plant.

Seeds have genetic information that came from two parent plants which may be expressed in a variety of different combinations. There are plants that may resemble more of its mother while some may appear to look like the father. Some may even look and have characteristics of both the mother and the father.

Making identical cannabis plants using seeds is quite a difficult and lengthy process. Usually, cannabis producers will plant many seeds and once these grow, the best plant will be chosen. The breeder will take clones from that plant to grow flowers or start with a healthy and well-developed clone from another grower as the mother plant.

Germinating cannabis seeds

Wild cannabis plants will drop their seeds to the ground as these die during fall. The seeds will start to sprout when the warmer and wetter weather of spring begins. These seeds will sprout and will grow into new plants. This is the traditional and natural way of germinating cannabis seeds.

There are a number of methods used by modern growers to germinate seeds. The seed should be placed in a potting soil mix with a ¼ of an inch of soil. Keep the soil moist and warm (50-70 degrees Fahrenheit) until the seed has sprouted. Other techniques will involve lightly filing or scuffing the seed coat to help the seed crack open, pre-soaking the seeds and germinating these in a wet paper towel till the taproot sprouts. As this happens, the seedlings will be planted in the growth medium using tweezers. You may also use products like starter plugs that consist of a block of growing medium which is made from compressed peat or coco coir. This has a small hole in the middle where the seed is planted.

About high CBD seeds

Cannabidiol or CBD is a chemical component present in the cannabis plant. There is much research in the benefit of CBD for the treatment of a variety of diseases and conditions. And because of the work of human selection for high THC content, cannabis that contains high levels of CBD has become very rare, as the genetic pathways where THC is synthesized by the plant are different compared to plants that were made for CBD production.

Meanwhile, cannabis that is used for the production of hemp has been selected for other traits, like their very low THC content. There are also many varieties of hemp plant produce significant quantities of CBD. CBD strains as a medicine have increased demands and many breeders have been breeding cannabis with high levels of CBD by crossing drug species with other hemp species. There are hemp species that are hybrids with little or no THC. Some have 1:1 ratio of THC and CBD and some that still have high THC content with moderate amounts of CBD at 3% or more.

There are a number of seed varieties that contain high CBD online and through medical dispensaries. Keep in mind that any plant grown from these seeds is not guaranteed to have high levels of CBD. This is because it takes many years to create a seed line that can provide consistent results. There are breeders who are working on making seed strains with consistently moderate to high CBD levels, but until these seeds are commercially available, a grower who wants to have these seeds will need to produce cannabis with a certain THC to CBD ratio. This may be grown from a proven clone or from many seeds to maturity. The grower will also need to have his yields tested for CBD levels either from a lab or from a nearby testing facility.

Buy cannabis seeds online or from a local seller?

You can find cannabis seeds from online seed banks or from a local seller. Most online seedbanks are located in the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, and Canada. In these places, laws on selling cannabis seeds are much laxer compared to other countries. If you are ordering seeds from these companies but you live in the US, there is a possibility that your orders may be seized by US Customs and Border Protection. Therefore if you live in the US, you can buy seeds from dispensaries or from local seedbanks especially if growing, use and buying seeds is regulated from where you live. Seed banks are already available in many US states and these will usually ship cannabis seeds anywhere in the US.

Are cannabis seeds legal from where you live?

It may or may not be legal to sell, purchase, or possess marijuana seeds from where you are located. In the US, there are states which allow the use and the growing of cannabis seeds. If you have a recreational grow license or medical recommendation in one of those states you must follow the applicable codes to grow or possess cannabis seeds.

Seed banks in other countries may be allowed to sell seeds for souvenir purposes due to the specific wording of the legal codes. Always take note that US Customs and Border Protection will seize any cannabis seeds found in packages that are shipped into the US. But usually, orders will not be traced to the receiver. You just won’t be able to receive your order.
